Bad Visibility and Big Bass

Well summer is officially here and so are the bass.  The water temperature is over the 60 degree mark and fish are taking up their summer residence.

With the recent ground swell the ocean is all churned up and the visibility is poor to down right terrible. Visibility ranged from 2 feet to 6 feet.  Despite the conditions the N.E.Spearo crew made it out and connected with some nice fish.

Spearfishing for large bass in reduced visibility requires optimal positioning on the bottom and lightning quick reflexes.  The diver must anticipate the direction the fish will come from and be ready to fire the split second the fish comes within sight. Having the speargun pulled in close and shooting "from the hip" is mandatory.

When targeting large bass in these conditions a short speargun with plenty of power is preferred.   The N.E. Spearo crew uses double banded guns with 16mm rubbers and spearguns sized 90cm to 100cm.  A thicker spear shaft 7mm to 7.5mm holds up better to the thrashing of large fish and is less likely to turn be turned into a pretzel.

Dive Safe.
